NEC LCD Technologies develops white LED-based LCD module

TOKYO, JAPAN & SANTA CLARA, USA: NEC LCD Technologies, and its sales and marketing channel in the Americas, NEC Electronics America, Inc., announced the development of a new amorphous-silicon color TFT-LCD module that achieves an ultra-wide color gamut for 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color range by incorporating a newly developed LED light-source unit into the backlight system and a newly developed color filter.

The white LED that serves as the light source for the backlight unit in this LCD module achieves its white light by mixing light generated through the irradiation of red, green, and blue (RGB) phosphors with light from a near-ultraviolet LED chip (excitation), making it superior to traditional white LEDs in terms of color-rendering properties.

Combining these newly developed white LEDs with newly developed color filters, optimized for this application, makes it possible to reproduce a wider range of colors covering 100 percent of the Adobe® RGB color range, which is generally beyond the reach of conventional standard white LEDs.

In recent years, there has been an increase in customer demand for LCD displays using white LEDs as light sources in backlight units due to the many benefits achieved with LED backlight systems versus cold-cathode-fluorescent-(CCFLs)-based backlights. Such benefits include smaller module dimensions, lighter-weight designs, and reduced power consumption.

The LEDs are also mercury free and do not require the use of high-voltage circuitry, allaying concerns related to safety and the generation of harmonic currents and high-frequency noise. The LEDs offer superior vibration and shock resistance as well as superior characteristics with respect to low-temperature startup and a wider dimming range.

The white LEDs currently in widespread use typically have weaker output in their red and green wavelength components than CCFLs, since they create white light by exciting the yellow phosphors that cover the blue LED chips. For this reason, when used as backlight light sources, traditional white LEDs, even when combined with color filters having a wide color gamut, impose limits on the expansion of the red and green color reproduction range, making it difficult to cover the Adobe® RGB color range.

NEC LCD Technologies overcame these problems with its newly developed LCD module that is compatible with applications requiring an ultra-wide color gamut, a capability difficult to achieve with traditional white LEDs.

mPhase 3D rendering of superhydrophobic silicon membrane for smart NanoBattery

LITTLE FALLS, USA: mPhase Technologies Inc. released a 3D rendering of its superhydrophobic silicon separator that is a key element in the Smart NanoBattery architecture.

The membrane design is based on a porous silicon material that has a similar appearance to a honeycomb. This unique proprietary design prevents the battery's liquid electrolyte from coming in contact with the electrodes until power is needed, creating an unparalleled battery design. This process gives the user of the Smart NanoBattery Power on Command, a unique differentiator from other battery designs.

The first version of the Smart NanoBattery is made up of 12 individual cells that are essentially individual batteries assembled into one battery package. The cells are arranged in a 4x3 matrix inside the Smart NanoBattery fixture, each of which include all of the elements to act as an independent battery.

To illustrate the extremely small or "micro" size of honeycomb pores, each cell contains approximately 17,000 pores that are much smaller than a human hair. One Smart NanoBattery with 12 cells contains approximately 204,000 pores in a package about the size of a matchbook. The ability to selectively control the activation of each individual cell has never before been accomplished in battery technology.

Microsemi's new line of three-level inverter power modules for solar converters

IRVINE, USA: Microsemi Corp., a leading manufacturer of high performance analog mixed signal ICs and high reliability semiconductors, has launched a new line of 20 standard three-level inverter power modules designed for solar converter applications.

"The introduction of these 20 three-level inverter power modules provides a wide range of solutions in terms of technologies and power ratings for solar inverter manufacturers," said Philippe Dupin, Director, Power Module Products, Power Products Group located in Bordeaux, France. "With very low profile and minimum parasitics these modules can enable very compact systems and the highest possible efficiencies, particularly if SiC diodes are used as replacements of FREDs," he added.

The standard modules are available in 600V and 1200V voltage for full IGBT configuration and in 600V and 900V for a mix of MOSFET and IGBT technology. Each module integrates a leg of the inverter such that three identical modules are used to achieve a 3-phase solar inverter. The modules are available in SP1, SP3 and SP6 packages.

Most of the 600V IGBT devices are offered with Trench and Field stop technology. Current specifications vary from 20A to 300A. Modules with current rating from 20A to 50A are integrated in SP1 and SP3 packages. Modules in SP1 packages offer a low-cost solution while equivalent modules in SP3 provide optional features such as an NTC thermistor for temperature monitoring and improved Kelvin connections for easier drive power devices.

The SP3 module range extends to 100A/600V and is also offered in 1200V with 60A current. At the high current end, standard modules with 150A, 200A and 300A currents are specified in the larger SP6 package with screw terminals.

Should the specified operating frequency be higher than 20 kHz, fast NPT IGBT modules are offered at 30A in SP1 and SP3 and 50A in SP3 to meet aggressive efficiency targets.

Photonics Festival in Taiwan 2009 creates brave new green world

TAIPEI, TAIWAN:Photonics Festival in Taiwan 2009, one of the most prominent photonics exhibition in Asia, will be held during June 10th to 12th 2009 at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1, covering the spectrum of photovoltaic, LED, optics, and other photonic areas.

MOSFET H-bridges optimize DC fan and inverter designs

DALLAS, USA: Diodes Inc., a leading global manufacturer and supplier of high-quality application specific standard products within the broad discrete and analog semiconductor markets, has announced a range of four H-bridge MOSFET packages that are set to dramatically simplify DC fan and Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) inverter circuits by reducing both component count and PCB size in space constrained applications.

Two 30V H-bridges, the ZXMHC3A01N8 and ZXMHC3F381N8, are well-suited for 12V DC fan and inverter applications and offer users a choice of low RDS(ON) performance. The 60V rated ZXMHC6A07N8 and 100V rated ZXMHC10A07N8 are industry firsts and are targeted at 24V DC and 48V DC motor control circuits, respectively.

Featuring dual complementary pairs of N- and P-type MOSFETs in an SO8 package, the ZXMHC parts can replace either four discrete SOT23 packaged MOSFETs or two SO8 complementary MOSFET packages.

The proprietary packaging enables significant reductions in the PCB footprint by at least 50 percent and in overall inventory cost for a wide range of existing motor or other inductive load drives.

Power Integrations achieves 92pc efficient power supply for LED streetlights

SAN JOSE, USA: Power Integrations, a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, has released a new engineering report (DER-212) describing a 92 percent-efficient power supply for LED streetlight applications.

The design utilizes Power Integrations’ HiperPLC power supply controller, which enables a simple, cost-effective circuit design by combining power factor correction (PFC) and resonant (LLC) control functions on a single integrated circuit. The new design will be showcased in the Power Integrations booth at LED Expo Korea (Kintex, Korea; May 20-23) and LED Lighting Taiwan (Taipei, Taiwan; June 10-12).

LEDs are rapidly emerging as the preferred streetlighting technology, displacing traditional technologies such as high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. LEDs consume far less electricity for each lumen of useful light emitted, delivering as many as 80 lumens per watt when driven by a high-efficiency resonant power supply, versus just 58 lumens per watt for HPS lamps.

In addition, LEDs provide better directional control and color quality than HPS lights, an important consideration in shopping and residential areas. LEDs can also turn on and off instantly and retain their efficiency when dimmed -– features well suited to automated sensing of ambient light and human activity, allowing light output to be optimized for cost, with minimal consequences to the community lighting scheme.

Maintenance costs, and therefore the total cost of ownership, are also significantly reduced due to the intrinsically high reliability of LEDs compared to HPS lamps.

HiperPLC, Power Integrations’ first high-power product, is designed to control AC-DC converters from 80 to 600 watts. HiperPLC minimizes costs by reducing the size of the PFC magnetics required, and by combining the PFC and LLC controllers into a single IC. The IC provides up to 0.99 power factor and features synchronization of PFC and LLC controllers.

Synchronization reduces the ripple in the bulk capacitors, which reduces capacitor operating temperature and significantly extends the life of the power supply. Support for HiperPLC is now featured in Power Integrations’ PI Expert software (version 7.1.4), an automated power supply design tool based on PI products.

Doug Bailey, Power Integrations’ vice president of marketing, said: "Municipalities around the world are finding that LEDs offer a greener, more economical approach to streetlighting by saving both energy and maintenance costs. OAS's unique technology prevents silver tarnishing

OXFORD, UK: Oxford Advanced Surfaces Group Plc, the advanced materials company, has developed a 1nm thick, environmentally friendly Onto coating that acts to protect silver against tarnishing.

The effect of atmospheric pollutants on the surface of exposed metals can result in the formation of a number of unwanted compounds causing tarnishing of the surface.

SUNNYVALE, USA: OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has developed the smallest member of the RGB Multi ChipLED family to bring a new dimension of high-definition picture quality to large full-color video screens.

The Multi ChipLED enables high-resolution full-color video screens –- for example, in television studios, modern conference rooms, trade fairs and concert halls –- to offer brilliant colors and high contrast from all viewing angles. The tiny dimensions of this Multi ChipLED allow a very large number of pixels to be accommodated in a small display area. Housed in a black package that is mostly impervious to ambient light, the LED emits light in brilliant colors with excellent contrast.

OSRAM’s RGB Multi ChipLEDs are housed in a miniature package with dimensions of only 1.6 mm x 1.6 mm and measure just 0.9 mm high. With the RGB Multi ChipLED, it is possible to have a pixel spacing of only 2 mm, meaning that a great many pixels can be generated in a very small area. For example, an area of less than 10 m² is sufficient to display pictures in HDTV quality and accommodate more than 2 million pixels. A 2.5 x 4.0 m (98” x 157”) display 10 m (394”) in diagonal can achieve a system luminance of 1500-2500 cd/m², corresponding to around ten times the luminance of a conventional LED-backlit TFT LCD screen.

Perfect color mixing takes place in the Multi ChipLED package itself thanks to the specially developed encapsulation material. Color appearance remains constant across the entire viewing angle, and the picture appears vibrant even when viewed off-axis. The beam angle of the LED is +/- 60°. Ambient light cannot ruin the picture quality because it is barely reflected at all by the black package in which the LED is housed.

Inside the Multi ChipLED, there is a red chip, blue chip and a green chip fabricated using OSRAM’s ThinFilm and ThinGaN technology. If the RGB-LED is operated with a current of 20 mA, the individual chips produce typical luminous intensities of 250 mcd (red), 350 mcd (green) and 70 mcd (blue). The typical efficiency of this luminous intensity is 4 cd/W, which corresponds to a luminous efficacy of 12 lm/W.

White record OLEDs of Dresden Univ. and Novaled surpass efficiency of fluorescent tubes

DRESDEN, GERMANY: White organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are a promising new technology to become the next generation light source. They have the potential of much higher efficiencies than classical lighting sources. Due to their unique features and attractive appearance white OLEDs will have a striking impact on the lighting industry.

These ultra-thin large-area-emitting devices can be flexible, transparent, color-tunable and scaled to virtually any size or shape enabling completely new ways for lighting designers. In terms of power efficiency, fluorescent tubes are a benchmark for emerging technologies with some 50-70 lm/W (considering losses in reflectors).

With the latest OLED record values of the Dresden University of Technology and Novaled AG closely cooperating in this project, this benchmark was clearly surpassed.

“In our approach, we combine a novel, very energy efficient emission layer design with improved light outcoupling concepts, leading to this breakthrough” says project leader Sebastian Reineke, Physicist at Institute of Applied Photophysics (IAPP, TU Dresden).

“The power efficiencies of the record devices reach 90 lm/W even if only flat, scalable outcoupling techniques are used. With special 3D outcoupling measures, even 124 lm/W have been achieved.” Both values were determined in an integrating sphere with blocked substrate edges, only taking the light into account that is emitted to the forward hemisphere, CIE color coordinates are (0.41/0.49). An in depth article is published in today’s highly esteemed research journal ‘nature’.

“The potential of the devices is obvious when one considers that even at the very high brightness of 5,000 cd/m2 a power efficiency of 74 lm/W is obtained,” comments Prof. Karl Leo, Director of IAPP. “Thus high-intensity illuminations at very high efficiencies are possible as well”.

“These results are at R&D level and further developments need to be made, e.g., for reaching commercially acceptable lifetime”, says Gildas Sorin, CEO of Novaled AG. “However, the values clearly indicate a major breakthrough and qualify OLEDs for mainstream lighting applications. The Novaled PIN OLED® technology is crucial, especially for combining high efficiencies with high-brightness data.

White OLEDs soon will help to reduce our carbon footprint and the Novaled doping technology will play a key role in this development”, adds Sorin.

RFMD expands broadband transmission product portfolio

GREENSBORO, USA: RF Micro Devices Inc. announced the addition of two new products to its extensive portfolio of broadband transmission products. The two newly released products are RFMD's D10040300GTH hybrid power doubler amplifier module and OS10040320PW optical receiver module. The OS10040320PW is a 1GHz hybrid high dynamic range optical receiver module designed for use in HFC optical nodes and deep fiber network installations. The OS10040320PW contains a single-mode optical input suitable for wavelengths from 1290nm to 1600nm, a terminal for monitoring the PIN diode current and an electrical output with an impedance of 75 Ohms.

The equivalent input noise current (EINC) performance of the OS10040320PW is among the industry's lowest at 5 pico Amps per root Hertz, typical performance, helping cable operators to implement "fiber deep" solutions as they upgrade to 1GHz networks. Specifically, by enabling the optical node portion of HFC networks to be placed deeper into CATV networks, the OS10040320PW minimizes requirements for more costly Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).

ST innovates high-voltage transistor technology

SINGAPORE: STMicroelectronics has introduced a new family of power MOSFETs combining higher voltage capability, greater ruggedness, and lower losses than previous devices, which are well suited for use in high-efficiency power supplies for products such as LCD monitors, televisions and energy-saving lamp ballasts.

The STx7N95K3 family introduces a new 950V breakdown-voltage class for power MOSFETs. This new class benefits systems that minimize energy losses by operating at high voltages such as 400V or more. Compared to competing 900V devices, ST’s new 950V power MOSFETs have a larger safe-operating area delivering greater reliability.

Designers can also use a single 950V MOSFET to replace two-transistor circuits sometimes used to build high-voltage supplies, simplifying design, reducing size and lowering component count.

In addition, the STx7N95K3 family has a higher avalanche current rating than competing devices, which ensures greater resilience to surges above the breakdown voltage which cause the device to avalanche. The avalanche-current rating of 9A compares with around 1A for the nearest competing 900V devices.

As well as withstanding higher applied voltages, the STx7N95K3 family also minimizes conduction losses by achieving RDS(ON) of less than 1.35 Ohm. This represents a 30 percent reduction in RDS(ON) per device size compared to previous-generation MOSFETs, and allows designers to increase power density as well as improve efficiency.

At the same time, these new MOSFETs also deliver high switching performance by achieving low gate charge (QG) and low intrinsic capacitance, which allow designers to use higher switching frequencies, enabling the use of smaller components to further enhance efficiency and power density.

STx7N95K3 MOSFETs achieve these performance advantages by using ST’s latest-generation SuperMESH3™ technology. The devices introduced are offered in industry-standard packages including the STF7N95K3 in the TO-220FP package, the STP7N95K3 in standard TO-220, and the STW7N95K3 in TO-247.

The next available devices will be the 950V BVDSS STW25N95K3, STP13N95K3, STD5N95K3 and 1200V BVDSS STP6N120K3. ST will follow these devices with further new product introductions in 2009, including 850V, 950V, 1050V and 1200V ranges.

The STx7N95K3 family is in production, priced at $2.00 in quantities of 1,000 pieces.

Klipsch sells Aragon and Acurus brands to Indy Audio Labs

INDIANAPOLIS, USA: Klipsch purchased selected assets of the privately held Mondial Designs Ltd. in 2001, acquiring the Aragon and Acurus brands of high-end amplifiers, preamplifiers and processors. Now, the leading global manufacturer of loudspeakers is selling the rights to these electronics brands to two former Klipsch employees.

According to Mike Klipsch, president of the Klipsch brand, Klipsch purchased the brands because, at the time, it was aggressively seeking new ways to enhance its sound experience and wanted to develop perfectly matched, electronic solutions under the Aragon name.

However, a few years in, the electronics market underwent significant changes and Klipsch decided to cease production of the Aragon line in 2005, while still honoring warranty terms and offering customer support. “From that point on, we decided our product development and engineering teams needed to be completely focused on what we do best and that’s building high-performance loudspeakers,” he noted.

Today, the discontinuation of Aragon has opened new doors for former Klipsch electronics engineers Rick Santiago and Ted Moore. These two industry veterans, with 36 years of experience combined, have co-founded a new independent startup company called Indy Audio Labs, LLC and plan on developing and marketing new products under the Aragon and Acurus names. Indy Audio Labs will also assume full responsibility for the ongoing service and support of existing Aragon and Acurus products.

Growing consumption of electronic goods to benefit crystal oscillator makers

NEW YORK, USA: The markets for crystals and crystal oscillators will more than double during the next five years due to the increasing demand worldwide for high-end consumer electronic goods and wireless devices, according to a new study from Visant Strategies.

Revenues for crystals will grow from $3.1 billion in 2008 to $4.3 billion in 2013 while the world market for crystal oscillators will almost double during the same timeframe, according to the report.

"We see a small shift from telecommunications to consumer electronics and home entertainment devices as the intended end application for crystals and crystal oscillators and likewise, the Asia-Pacific nations will see its leading consumption of crystals and crystal oscillators grow," said Kaustubha Parkhi, author of "Crystal Oscillators 2008: The Decade Ahead."

While use in telecommunications devices continues as the largest application for crystal oscillators, accounting for more than half of all shipments in 2008, this share will drop slightly during the next five years, according to the report.

"Most of this loss will be gained by the consumer electronics and entertainment segment, a category in which shipments will grow by fifty percent through the next five years," Parkhi said.

The Asia-Pacific region will reign as the major consumer and producer of crystals, responsible for more than half of the world consumption, the report finds. North America will lose market share in production of crystal oscillators annually during the next five years, the report states.

"Crystal Oscillators 2008: The Decade Ahead" assesses the markets for crystals and crystal-based oscillators. World shipments and revenues are provided for each product type: crystals, uncompensated crystal oscillators (XO), temperature compensated crystal oscillators (TCXO), voltage controlled crystal oscillators (VCXO), and oven controlled crystal oscillators (OCXO).

Product types are further broken down by application, stability, regional output and consumption, output frequency ranges and packaging techniques. Crystal oscillators are also broken down according to output waveform types. Key end use and design trends are considered for each product type with examples given.

Handsfree car kits not truly handsfree!

USA: Strategy Analytics' Wireless Device Lab service research, “HandsFree Car Kits: Consumers Lack a Truly HandsFree Experience", shows that purchasers of after market car kits in the UK would like to use speech recognition in order to make their car kit experience truly hands-free; but speech recognition systems fall short of expectations.

These findings are based on in-depth one-on-one research sessions with participants near London, England.

“Strategy Analytics research shows that consumers would like their car kits to provide easy and intuitive handsfree methods for dialing and answering their cell phones while driving,” commented Chris Schreiner, Senior User Experience Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “However, consumers struggle with speech recognition due to usability issues.”

Kevin Nolan, Vice President of the Strategy Analytics User Experience Practice, added, "Our research also shows that streaming music is a service in some car kits that adds value for the consumer, although consumers prefer to experience music via direct hookup through their vehicle speakers rather than via an FM transmitter.”

ST, Front Edge to bring next-gen battery technology to new markets

SINGAPORE: STMicroelectronics announced a commercial agreement with Front-Edge Technology (FET), the California-based developer of next-generation rechargeable batteries, enabling ST to bring FET’s NanoEnergy ultra-thin lithium battery technology to a wide range of new markets and applications.

This new technology is meant to fill the gap created by conventional energy-storage devices not keeping pace with the demanding size and high-density power requirements of today’s cutting-edge electronic devices. The new devices, which are destined for consumer and industrial markets, demand innovative energy-storage and battery technologies.

Solid-state thin-film energy cells offer a revolutionary way of storing energy for ‘micro-power’ devices, such as high-end ‘One-Time-Password’ smartcards; battery-assisted RFID tags; wireless sensor networks; real-time clock (RTC) back-up batteries; and multiple medical applications, including hearing aids, automatic insulin pumps and wearable health monitoring systems.

A key advantage of the ultra-thin solid-state battery technology is its physical flexibility, enabling different sizes and shapes of ‘bendable’ batteries, as thin as 200 microns, making it ideal for portable and extremely small form factor devices. Additionally, the battery’s solid electrolyte is Lithium Phosphorus Oxynitride (LiPON), a material originally developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratories. This enables the thin-film FET technology, in comparison with a device with equivalent energy storage capacity, to deliver in the range of 10 to 20 times more power than existing state-of-the-art coin-cell batteries.

FET’s solid-state micro-batteries have been shown to offer longer life, short-circuit prevention for greater safety, and a lower environmental burden than existing battery technologies. Other key characteristics of the FET technology include long cycle life, with more than 1,000 cycles at 50 percent discharge; fast current charge enabling batteries to be charged to 80 percent of rated capacity within 15 minutes; and high stability, with a low self-discharge of less than 15 percent per year.

“There is large and growing gap between the increasingly fast pace of the proliferation and demands of today’s leading-edge portable electronic products and the capabilities of existing energy sources, in performance, operating life and environmental impact,” said Carmelo Papa, Executive Vice President and General Manager of ST’s Industrial and Multisegment Sector (IMS). “As one of the world’s largest and most innovative semiconductor companies, ST has the vision, breadth and market reach to bring FET’s revolutionary ultra-thin battery technology to new industrial and consumer applications.”

Additionally, brightness is a remarkable 155 lm at an operating current of 700 mA (warm white). At these performance levels, the OSLON SSL LED can meet the demand for high-lighting levels using fewer LEDs with currents up to 1A.

Crystal IS, Sanan Optoelectronics to develop commercial UV-C LEDs

GREEN ISLAND, USA: Crystal IS Inc., the world’s leading developer of ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-C LEDs) and Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., the largest manufacturer of full color LEDs in the People’s Republic of China, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Leviton and Molex to offer integrated, modular LED solutions to lighting fixture industry

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc., North America’s foremost manufacturer of electrical and electronic wiring devices for OEM lighting fixture customers, and Molex Inc. have entered into a strategic alliance to deliver LED lighting solutions to manufacturers of commercial, industrial and residential lighting fixtures.

The partnership will align Molex’s Transcend Lighting Series of LED products with Leviton’s extensive distribution and sales networks, helping to drive the adoption of LED light source technology to fixture manufacturers on a global scale.

MIC, TERI light rural villages and homes through high efficiency solar LED lighting systems and LED lanterns

Is there a life for bulk GaN substrate out of the blue laser diode business?

FRANCE: Yole Developpement has released a new market analysis dedicated to Bulk GaN. In this report, the French consulting company detailed the major market metrics of the current and projected bulk/free-standing GaN substrate business, with a focus on applications, key players, volumes and related market size of each segment.

Yole highlighted the possible total accessible market for GaN substrates, including the strengths and weaknesses of this technology over the current established epiwafer or ELO technologies. Yole’s described the recent progress in crystalline quality as well as the new challenges offered by non-polar and semi-polar GaN material.

From blue lasers to lighting and power electronics
Today, bulk or Free-Standing (FS) GaN substrate market is mostly driven by the blue laser diode production only and its related application in high-density data storage. This market is driven by strong demand for Bluray players and game stations.

From 2011 and most likely 2012, Ultra-High Brightness (UHB) LEDs will start taking part of the bulk-GaN production. “That will only be possible with a sharp drop in bulk-GaN prices. We forecast that the critical threshold is below $1,500 for a 2” “LED-grade” substrate”, explained Dr Philippe Roussel, Project Manager at Yole Développement. Only such a price level will act as leverage for LED market take-off.

2012-2013 will also see the introduction of new power devices based on bulk-GaN. Again, here, that is strongly linked to the pricing of bulk-GaN that will have to compete with 4” and future 6” SiC offer and GaN-on-Silicon alternate technology.

Lack of bulk material pushes for ELO technique
Market is now essentially centered on free-standing material. However, the shortage of this product has to be compensated by the use of home-made ELO-GaN on sapphire substrates. Yole Développement assumes about 28% of LD was made on ELO-GaN in 2008. This percentage will decrease a little but will stay significant by 2012.

Asia dominates the substrate business but EU and US exhibit credible challengers

The main free-standing producer remains Sumitomo, mostly supplying Nichia and Sony for laser production. Other challengers such as Hitachi-cable (now sampling 3” wafers) or Mitsubishi Chemical are becoming more and more present.

In Europe, LumiLOG, now part of Saint-Gobain group and the UK company, NanoGaN, is fine-tuning its product line-up for the LED illumination business; Ammono and TopGaN are improving their strong expertise in low dislocation density crystals.

The US region is mainly focusing on non or semi-polar material, with Kyma, Inlustra Technologies or Oxford Instruments (TDI).

By 2015, bulk GaN for LED will dominate the substrate market in volume

2” substrates production volume could reach about 100,000 units by 2010, leading to a relative $240M market for both free-standing and ELO. Beyond 2013, the growing demand for bulk GaN in LED lighting applications will rapidly dominates the market in volume.

IPC releases PCB industry results for March 2009

BANNOCKBURN, Ill., USA: IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries recently announced the March findings from its monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program.

PCB industry growth rates and Book-to-Bill ratios announced
Rigid PCB shipments are down 30.5 percent and bookings are down 39.8 percent in March 2009 from March 2008. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments are down 24.6 percent and bookings are down 35.6 percent. Compared to the previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 9.6 percent and rigid bookings increased 10.5 percent. The book-to-bill ratio for the North American rigid PCB industry in March 2009 remained below parity but moved up slightly to 0.92.

Flexible circuit shipments in March 2009 are up 1.0 percent, and bookings are down 12.0 percent compared to March 2008. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments are up 6.0 percent and bookings are down 7.4 percent. Compared to the previous month, flexible circuit shipments are up 22.3 percent and flex bookings are up 15.0 percent. The North American flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio in March 2009 dropped to 0.87.

For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in March 2009 decreased 28.3 percent from March 2008 and orders booked decreased 38.0 percent from March 2008. Year to date, combined industry shipments are down 22.7 percent and bookings are down 34.0 percent. Compared to the previous month, combined industry shipments for March 2009 are up 10.7 percent and bookings are up 10.9 percent. The combined (rigid and flex) industry book-to-bill ratio in March 2009 was 0.91.

“Sales and orders improved in March over the first two months of the year due to seasonal effects, but year-on-year growth in rigid PCBs is still down significantly,” said IPC President Denny McGuirk. “Orders are still lagging behind sales, which suggests that sales will continue to weaken for the next quarter.”

The book-to-bill ratios are calculated by dividing the value of orders booked over the past three months by the value of sales billed during the same period from companies in IPC’s survey sample. A ratio of more than 1.00 suggests that current demand is ahead of supply, which is a positive indicator for sales growth over the next two to three months.
