Moser Baer Technologies, Universal Display announce technology and licensing agreement for energy-efficient white OLED lighting

CANANDAIGUA & EWING, USA: Moser Baer Technologies Inc., a US subsidiary of Moser Baer India Ltd., and Universal Display Corp., enabling energy-efficient displays and lighting with its UniversalPHOLED technology and materials, announced that the two companies have agreed to terms of a Memorandum of Agreement for technology licensing, material supply and technology assistance to support Moser Baer Technologies’ initiatives in white OLED lighting.

This agreement follows a program that the two companies announced last year in which the companies received $4,000,000 from the US Department of Energy to design and build the first white OLED lighting pilot manufacturing facility in the United States.

Under the agreement, Moser Baer Technologies will license Universal Display’s proprietary PHOLED and other OLED technologies and purchase Universal Display’s highly energy-efficient UniversalPHOLED materials for white OLED panel manufacturing. Moser Baer Technologies and Universal Display will also work together in a five-year program to support Moser Baer’s manufacture of white PHOLED lighting products.

The establishment of Moser Baer Technologies’ pilot manufacturing facility is a key next step in the development of a manufacturing base and market for white OLED lighting products in the US. The resulting panels will be made available to luminaire manufacturers to help seed the market for a range of new white OLED lighting products in the $90 billion lighting market.

The joint DOE program between Moser Baer Technologies and Universal Display is part of the DOE’s long-term commitment to advancing the development and introduction of energy-efficient white OLED lighting sources for general illumination. PHOLED technology is expected to play a critical role in the development and deployment of OLED solid state lighting technology, which offers increased energy efficiency, decreased power consumption, and an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

According to industry estimates, electric bills for lighting alone are over $200 billion per year on a worldwide basis. It has been estimated that by 2016, white OLEDs could generate well over $20 billion in worldwide savings of electricity costs and could save over nine million metric tons of carbon emissions from the US alone.

GigOptix to acquire Endwave

PALO ALTO, USA: GigOptix Inc., a leading supplier of high performance electronic and electro-optic components that enable next generation 40G and 100G optical networks, has signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire Endwave Corp., a leading provider of high frequency RF solutions and semiconductor products for the wireless mobile backhaul communications, satellite communications, electronic instruments and defense and security markets.

The combined company will retain the name GigOptix, Inc. to become a high speed, high frequency leader for optical and wireless communications. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.

Valeo files record number of patents in 2010

PARIS, FRANCE: Valeo announced that it filed a record number of patents in 2010. The Group filed 612 initial patents throughout the year, an increase of more than 20% versus the average of the past five years. This places Valeo among the top patent filers in France.

Hubbell Lighting Luminaires provide safety and sustainability for LEED certified garage at University of Nebraska

GREENVILLE, USA: Hubbell Lighting, a division of Hubbell Inc., and a market leader in innovative lighting technology for over a century, provided both indoor and outdoor energy efficient illumination for a 5-story parking garage with more than 1,000 parking spaces on the campus of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Built near the east/northeast corner of the growing higher education campus, the parking garage, which opened in the Fall 2010 semester primarily to serve students and faculty, attained USGBC LEED certification, a first for the State of Nebraska for this type of parking structure.

Under the guidance of Engineering Technologies Inc., (ETI), the lighting specified for the garage called for 379 state-of-the-art interior and 47 exterior pole mounted fixtures from Kim Lighting, a Hubbell Lighting brand. ETI chose Kim Lighting’s patent-pending PGL7- LED fixtures for interior illumination and Kim’s WARP9-LED pole mounted area lighting fixtures for the garage’s exposed roof level parking.

“As designer of the facility, our main goal was to provide a safe and effective environment for the occupants,” said Gary Loop, an ETI principal/electrical engineer.

“We took advantage of the unique characteristics of the light sources available to us as well as the energy they saved. By comparison to traditional indoor HID 100watt HID lamps/magnetic ballast, the PGL7 LED/electronic driver provides a 44 percent energy savings per unit; compared to an outdoor 250 watt HID/magnetic ballast the new WARP9 LED/electronic driver provides a 52 percent energy savings per unit, impressive figures that go directly to the University’s bottom line. When we were presented with Kim’s new PGL7 and WARP9 luminaires by Lighting Specialists, the Hubbell Lighting sales agency, we could immediately observe the energy savings they presented.”

“Unique to Kim’s new designs were the internal optics that not only provided the light levels desired but also put the light where we wanted. One of the important visual characteristics that we observed from Kim’s fixtures was the reduction in glare compared to similar LED fixtures and conventional sources. Being able to provide a well lit environment while minimizing distractions to the driver allowed us to provide an effective design,” said Loop.

“To meet high standards of reduced energy and maintenance costs as well as limited light trespass, Kim’s proprietary MicroEmitter technology was used to provide the garage with exceptional luminous uniformity and glare control. Unlike most LED and HID luminaries whose light output is directed straight down, the Kim luminaries with MicroEmitter technology dramatically improve illumination uniformity by eliminating the wasteful “nadir dump” of lumens directly below the fixture. Because each MicroEmitter is precisely aimed exactly where needed, glare is substantially reduced preventing direct view of more than 50 percent of the LEDs from any viewing angle,” noted a Kim Lighting spokesperson.

In addition to the Kim Lighting’s remarkable fixture performance, the company is doing its part to limit hazardous waste by using aluminum-housing materials and reflector components constructed from more than 90 percent recycled materials for all MicroEmitter LED luminaire offerings. All of Kim’s LED products are entirely lead and mercury free meeting strict US and international environmental protection and recyclable requirements.

Diodes Inc.'s op-amps raise audio performance

DALLAS, USA: Diodes Inc., a leading global manufacturer and supplier of high-quality application specific standard products within the broad discrete, logic and analog semiconductor markets, announced the release of the APX4558 dual channel op-amps.

With a low input noise performance of only 8nV/√Hz at 1kHz, these dual channel op-amps meet demands for higher performance audio without an increase in BOM cost. This performance, coupled with a wide unity gain bandwidth of 3MHz, makes the op-amps well suited to a broad range of cost-sensitive audio products including set top boxes and pre-amplifiers.

Two variants are being offered by Diodes, the commercial grade APX4558 with an operating temperature range of 0ºC to 70ºC and the industrial grade APX4558I, operating from -40ºC up to 105ºC. Both new parts are provided in the SO8 package and are pin-for-pin compatible with industry standard op-amp alternatives.

The op-amps are short-circuit protected and the devices’ internal compensation delivers stability that removes the need for additional external frequency compensation components.

RFMD receives first production orders for PowerSmart power platform

GREENSBORO, USA: RF Micro Devices Inc. has received its first volume production orders for its PowerSmart power platforms. The production orders are in support of a highly anticipated smartphone and tablet product family to be launched by a leading cellular handset manufacturer beginning in the March, 2011, quarter.

In addition to the RF Configurable Power Core, which performs all power amplification and power management functionality, RFMD's PowerSmart power platforms also include all necessary switching and signal conditioning functionality in a compact reference design, providing smartphone manufacturers a single scalable source for the entire cellular front end.

RFMD expects to commence volume shipments of PowerSmart in the current quarter, with sequential growth anticipated in the June, 2011, quarter.
