New Brad direct-link industrial Ethernet switches from Molex

LISLE, USA: Molex Inc., the leading global supplier of interconnect solutions, has introduced a B series of managed and unmanaged Brad Direct-Link Ethernet Switches that provides reliable and robust performance across complex industrial networks in a wide range of control and monitoring functions.

“Our next generation Brad Direct-Link Ethernet Switches feature new enclosure designs, broader operating temperature range and more compact 16- and 18-port designs,” comments Michael Frayne, global product manager, Molex. “Industrial control applications require complex networks with high data rates and time-sensitive devices whilst harsh environments on the plant floor create vibration, heat and other hazards. The Brad Direct-Link Ethernet Switches meet the three main design challenges posed by industrial Ethernet applications – determinism, robustness and ease of integration.”

Determinism is the assurance that control communication will occur in a set period of time and this requires the use of industrialized IEEE 802.3 protocols, such as Ethernet/IP*, PROFINET† or Modbus ‡TCP.

Built in accordance to UL508 and UL1604 safety standards, the Brad Direct-Link Industrial Ethernet Switches can withstand extreme operating conditions. Unmanaged, standard duty (SD) switches in tough Lexan polycarbonate provide a cost-effective network solution for a wide range of low-end DIN rail applications. For tougher, heavy-duty (HD) industrial DIN rail or panel mounting applications, the aluminum enclosure provides IP40 performance and reliable operation between -40 to +85°C.

The Brad Direct-Link Industrial Ethernet Switches from Molex offer plug-and-play simplicity at power up; no software installation or configuration is required ensuring fast and easy integration.

The managed Brad Direct-Link Switches support the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) for multicast filtering and increased determinism. This saves downstream devices in the Ethernet network from dealing with unnecessary traffic. The switches also support Virtual LANs (VLANs) for convenient, programmable traffic segmentation, QoS/CoS (priority Queuing) for real-time operation with the added security benefit of authentication and encryption techniques, and Real-Time Ring compliant redundant Ethernet ring capability.

Power modules with additional low inductive current path

GERMANY: Parasitic inductances are a major problem with power modules, in particular in fast switching applications. The parasitic inductance of the component interconnections causes an overvoltage condition and increases the switch-off losses in the semiconductor.

Many initiatives have been investigated to reduce the parasitic inductance in power modules utilizing a complex mechanical construction of overlapping internal bus bars forming the DC path.

The first results of the new idea to separate the current paths into a static low resistive screw contact and in a transient low inductive PCB-based connection are promising. The limit for reduction of stray inductance is not yet reached. The new solution is a new milestone for low inductive high power module technology. The 2nH target turns from an imaginary target into a realistic one and it opens the field for new fast high power module topologies.

Vincotech’s article about “Power Modules with Additional Low Inductive Current Path” outlines a concept using today’s standard power module construction but providing an additional ultra low inductive path for the transient current.

Samsung and Evident Technologies enter into LED patent agreement

TROY, USA & SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Evident Technologies Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd have entered into a comprehensive patent licensing and purchasing agreement for Evident's quantum dot LED technology. This agreement grants Samsung worldwide access to Evident's patent portfolio for all products related to quantum dot LEDs from manufacture of the quantum dot nanomaterials to final LED production.

"We are excited that Samsung, the leader in consumer electronics, has licensed our quantum dot technology," said Dr. Clint Ballinger, CEO of Evident Technologies. "We already enjoy a terrific working relationship and look forward to the future of this technology."

Quantum dots are nanometer-sized semiconductor crystals that have great commercial promise in electronic applications from solar energy conversion to thermoelectrics to LEDs. Evident was the first company in the world to commercialize quantum dot LEDs with products launched in 2007.

Flextronics announces OLED lighting distribution agreement with Sanyo Chemical Industries

PITTSBURGH, USA & KYOTO, JAPAN: Plextronics Inc. announced that it has signed an OLED lighting distribution agreement with Sanyo Chemical Industries Ltd.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sanyo will distribute select Plexcore OC inks developed specifically for use in OLED lighting applications in the Japanese market.
Jim Dietz, Plextronics VP of Business Development, indicated that the relationship with Sanyo has been a long-standing and important one for both companies.

"Sanyo has a tremendously strong reputation in the Japanese market for the quality and performance of the products it makes and sells. We've worked with them for the last few years, and there is no one better suited to be our distribution partner in Japan," said Dietz.

He added, "This agreement will give us the ability to work much more closely with some of the top OLED lighting developers in the world to drive the adoption and commercialization of OLED technology."

Fusayoshi Masuda, Sanyo Chemical's representative director and executive VP, emphasized that Sanyo is enthusiastically developing new business fields. "From that point of view, new conductive polymer technology introduced by Plextronics was very attractive to us. We are sure that based upon our close relationship with our customers, this distribution agreement will be a good starting point for developing such new business opportunities," said Masuda.

Plexcore OC product platform
Plexcore OC includes two product lines with tunable hole injection designed for different device architectures – Plexcore OC AQ and Plexcore OC NQ. Plexcore OC AQ consists of water-based HIL inks designed to deliver stable, low operating voltage and extended lifetime in polymer OLED (P-OLED) displays as well as hybrid phosphorescent OLED lighting panels.

Plexcore OC NQ includes solvent-based HIL inks for solution-processed phosphorescent OLED emitters. Combining new conductive polymer technology with solvent-based ink formulations, this HIL enables OLED display manufacturers to solution-process this layer without the concerns of potential device degradation due to the acidic nature of other HIL technologies.

In devices, Plexcore OC NQ dramatically reduced operating voltage that is extending device lifetimes to be competitive with vapor-deposited OLED displays.

Diodes Inc.'s DC/DC converters increase efficiency

PLANO, USA: Diodes Inc., a leading global manufacturer and supplier of high-quality application specific standard products within the broad discrete, logic and analog semiconductor markets, has introduced the AP6507 and AP6508 synchronous DC/DC buck converters.

Delivering a continuous load current of up to 3A, the AP6507 and AP6508 converters offer designers of distributed power systems an operating efficiency as high as 90 percent. With input voltage ranges of 4.5V to 18V and 4.5V to 21V respectively, these compact converters will support the needs of low voltage 5V and 12V bus systems in a broad range of consumer electronic products, including monitors, LCD TV and set-top box.

Using a simple external resistor divider, the adjustable output of the DC/DC converters can be set to any voltage down to as low as 0.8V. To meet demands for increased power densities, the converters are provided in space-saving exposed pad package options: the AP6507 in SO-8EP, and the AP6508 in DFN4030-14EP.

By operating at a high switching frequency of 500kHz, the converters can also make use of smaller external components. That smaller footprint along with the devices’ integration of high- and low-side MOSFET switches, internal compensation and protection features, enables significant system board space savings.

The integrated overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown features of both DC/DC converters combine to increase system stability and achieve long-term reliability. Additional features provided by the AP6508 are an externally programmable soft-start function and a power good flag, enabling the implementation of power sequencing and ramp control.

Digi-Key and Orion Fans sign global distribution agreement

THIEF RIVER FALLS & DALLAS, USA: Digi-Key Corp. has signed a global distribution agreement with Orion Fans.

Orion Fans’ products will be available on Digi-Key’s portfolio of global websites. Orion Fans’ entire thermal management portfolio, including AC fans, DC fans, fan trays, fan accessories, and blowers will be included in the distribution agreement.
