iWatt single-stage SSL LED drivers deliver exceptional bulb dimming performance
USA: iWatt Inc., a leading provider of digital-centric power management integrated circuits (ICs), launched its latest single-stage, solid state lighting (SSL) LED drivers to address cost, performance and lifetime issues in dimmable bulb applications.
Following the introduction of its single-stage LED driver for non-dimmable incandescent bulb replacement applications earlier this year, iWatt is debuting the iW3606 (8W output power) and iW3608 (15W output power), giving LED bulb manufacturers an alternative approach to significantly lower cost and tackle the lifetime and performance issues in dimmable applications.
Both new LED drivers allow SSL designers to reduce their bill of materials (BOM) cost by 20-40 percent compared to competitive solutions. The iW3606 and iW3608 incorporate iWatt’s patented, configurable over-temperature protection (OTP) and derating functionality to provide predictability and reliability of bulb operating life and offer what the company believes is the industry’s lowest pop-on current, less than 5 percent of light output.
Designed for all retrofit bulbs, including candle and GU10 lamp replacements used in existing phase-cut dimmer installations, the iW3606 and iW3608 manage the key issues that could impact consumer adoption of SSL lighting, including poor dimming performance (pop-on, popcorning, dead travel, drop-out, flicker), short bulb lifetime or failure, and high cost.
Both drivers meet or exceed global regulations for power quality and efficiency with a high power factor (PF) of less than 0.92, low total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 20 percent, and high efficiency. The iW3606 and iW3608 have already been designed in to the next-generation of dimmable SSL bulb products from key iWatt customers.
The on-chip over-temperature protection (OTP) and derating feature of the iW3606 and iW3608 addresses the thermal issues caused by the high and unpredictable operating temperatures in dimmable SSL applications. The lifetime of many of the components in the LED driver circuit, especially electrolytic capacitors, degrades as temperatures increase, potentially reducing overall bulb lifetime to less than 2,000 hours, well under the 30,000 to 50,000 hours expected for SSL bulbs.
iWatt’s OTP derating monitors the temperature inside the sealed SSL bulb and when thermal conditions reach a point set by the system designer, the LED drivers automatically reduce the current drive to the LEDs, lowering the power dissipation and resulting in cooler overall operation. This helps prevent exceeding the temperature rating of the electrolytic capacitors in the system, helping to ensure a predictable and safer bulb operating life.

Cree intros industry’s first no-compromise ceramic mid-power LEDs
USA: Cree Inc. is redefining the mid-power LED market with the new XLamp XH Series LEDs – the first family of mid-power ceramic LEDs that offer no-compromise performance and reliability.
Unlike today’s common mid-power plastic packages, XLamp XH-G and XH-B LEDs enable lighting manufacturers to create a new generation of more energy-efficient, longer life LED lighting solutions without sacrificing cost or performance. XH LEDs are optimized for fluorescent replacement lighting applications such as troffers and panel lights, where high efficacy, lifetime and smooth appearance are critical.
The XH-G LED delivers leading efficacy levels of up to 170 lumens-per-watt at 65 mA, 5000K, 80 CRI and 25°C. In addition, the ceramic-based XH LEDs are designed to deliver the long L70 lifetimes at high temperature and high current operation of Cree’s other high-power LEDs, such as XP and XT LEDs.

Estimated 24 million light vehicles will deploy LED headlights by 2020
USA: The Automotive Electronics Service report, "LED Headlights: Styling Drives Growth, Control and Cost Challenges Remain", Strategy Analytics offers two scenarios for semiconductor LED (Light Emitting Diode) headlight adoption: Meeting demand from luxury brands and high end model segments for enhanced styling, some 12 percent of light vehicles by 2020 will feature LED headlights; however, should cost reduction strategies prove successful, deployment will enter the mass market and production penetration will increase to approximately 21 percent (24 million vehicles).
Challenges facing headlight designers' desire to use the styling flexibility offered by LED adoption include brightness levels from current LED chips, thermal issues, complexity of controlling LED headlights and their increased functionality, and ultimately, the higher assembly costs when compared to competing halogen- and xenon-based systems.
Players in the market are making use of platform designs in making LED headlights flexible to meet the differing demands of the various auto makers, in order to limit development costs. Some Tier 1 suppliers are implementing cost-down strategies by limiting the number of LED chips in the headlight design. Many designs use LEDs primarily for low beam, and use conventional halogen bulbs for the less frequently used high beam. The idea is to make LED headlights more affordable and thus widen their appeal and adoption on high volume mid and lower segment vehicles.
"As with many other electronic features," said Kevin Mak, analyst in the Automotive Electronics Service (AES) at Strategy Analytics, "intensifying competition among auto makers is forcing the growth of LED headlights. Innovative and attractive LED vehicle headlamp designs have captured consumer attention and are raising interest in feature enhancements, such as cornering lights and automatic high beam assistance. LEDs can offer these advantages, however they come at a cost."
"On the supply side, lighting vendors must find adaptable solutions in developing new LED headlight designs for more frequent model cycles and the more compact model segments," Mak also added. "At the same time, more complicated matrix headlight systems will enter the high-end market, posing even greater technical challenges for both module designers and semiconductor component suppliers."

China electronic components distributors expect average revenue growth of 23 percent in 2013
CHINA: Electronic components distributors in China expect continued revenue growth of 23 percent in 2013, despite ongoing economic pressures in the global market.
This is among the findings of the 13th Annual Electronic Components Distributor Survey announced today by Electronics Supply & Manufacturing-China (ESM-China), a leading electronics management title published by Global Sources' joint venture, eMedia Asia Ltd.
Surveyed distributors indicated an average revenue growth of 18 percent in 2012, with main markets being consumer electronics, industrial electronics, and networking and communications systems. This year, the markets of note are security and surveillance, medical electronics, smart grid and LED lightings.
A total of 126 senior managers working for leading components distributors in China and 2,274 corporate, purchasing and procurement managers from China's electronics manufacturers participated in the Survey -- which aims to take an in-depth look into their current challenges and future strategies.
On average, China manufacturers purchased 197 million yuan worth of components in 2012, of which 61 percent were from distributors. This represented a 7 percentage point increase compared with 2011. Additionally, 69 percent of the manufacturers indicated that they would further increase the proportion of components purchased from distributors in 2013.
Manufacturers are deepening their relationships with distributors due to the latter's increasing capability to deliver value-added services. For franchised distributors, the most valued services are technical support (49 percent) and small-volume procurement (28 percent); for independent distributors, the most valued services include sourcing of hard-to-find components (54 percent) and small-volume procurement (37 percent). For technical support, reference design (71 percent) and field application support (70 percent) are most in demand.
Manufacturers choose by quality and price
Product quality remains the prime consideration when choosing distributors (49 percent), followed by price (34 percent for franchised distributors and 37 percent for independent distributors) and delivery lead times (23 percent and 32 percent respectively).
Unstable quality, long delivery lead times and uncompetitive prices are China manufacturers' major issues when working with distributors.
"Thanks to the continued support from local and international distributors, ESM-China's annual Survey continues to provide a strong and credible barometer of the industry. Despite the challenging global economic environment, these distributors remain cautiously optimistic about the China market in 2013. This is in line with manufacturers' plans to increase the ratio of components purchased from distributors," said ESM-China Publisher, Brandon Smith .
Softening demand was the main challenge facing distributors in 2012 which they addressed by developing new application markets, expanding customer base as well as strengthening marketing activities.
The proportion of online transaction in 2012 was 11 percent for franchised distributors (2 percentage points higher than 2011), and 20 percent for independent distributors (unchanged from 2011).

CimatronE live milling with Mitsubishi at Feimafe, Brazil
