LEDinside predicts CAGR of HB LED production value will reach 17 percent within five years

TAIPEI, TAIWAN: LEDforum 2010 is a two-day event organized by is LEDinside and the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute. The agenda for the second day covers on LED lighting and other important LED applications. Focus on the future direction of LED industry, LEDforum is an advanced conference to grasp new market trend and future opportunities.

From Ms. Wu's data, she forecasted that the LED industry scale will be over 120 billion RMB in 010 and the CAGR of 35 percent from 2010 through 2015. Besides, the draft plan of the LED industry for 2011-2015 carried out by National Development and Reform Commission and the technological target for 2015 made by Ministry of Science and Technology. Last, but not the least, the role of CAS in LED enterprisers and research centers in China are also included.

On the consumer application side, Piet Derks, Philips Lighting’s General Manager, R&D Lighting China, will share with audience how using the company’s efficient lighting systems offer better lighting experience. Derks will discuss the company’s innovation strategy, including creating designs with adaptive lighting. Additionally, he will also highlight the three key elements to evaluate LED solutions, sustainability, quality of light, value over lifetime.

Sumio Shimode, Sanyu Rec Co.'s Adviser, will share the current LED market changes, the implementation of the Japanese market and regulation in this seminar. He will provide a lot of LED lighting market experience from Japan, included energy-saving plocy for enterprise and local organisation, the progress of Japan's LED standards.

Lee Soo Ghee, Cree's MD, will explain the detail of Cree's LED City program and plan, which is already implement in different cities worldwide. These projects help cities to save energy consumption, to reduce carbon emissions. He will also talk about how to promote the LED lighting market development in different regions.

Sean Zhou, Philips Lumileds's Regional Marketing Director Asia, will discuss the key to promote LED lighting successfully. He will talk about the development of high-performance LED, as well as general lighting market demand and technology association.

Director at Delta Electronics, Roland Chiang, will talk about LED lighting in the coming decade by taking the audience through a brief overview of the lighting history, then discussing LED lighting today and tomorrow. Chiang will highlight technology advancements and technology targets in the coming decade, as well as Delta’s commitment to provide more value to its customers.

According to Witsview analyst Eric, The development of LED-backlit TV and monitor shows a squat-jump posture in 2010 and 2011. Since the beginning of 2010, the critical problems that LED-backlit products have encountered such as the high cost, high pricing, key material shortage, and limited panel supply have been gradually improved through the structure modification and the price reduction. It is expected that the explosive growth will reflect on the penetration rate, projected at nearly 50 percent, in 2011.

Dr. L.C. Yang, Chairman of Macroblock, Inc. will address the topic of “RGB LED Lighting in Buildings and Commercial Applications” Dr. Yang will take the audience through several application cases of LED lighting. He will then discuss key elements for architecture LED lighting, with detailed discussion on DMX protocol, controller system, multi-channel converter, and RGB cluster. Dr Yang will also explore practical issues for architectural LED lighting and commercial applications.

Roger Chu, Research Director at LEDinside, division of TrendForce, indicated that worldwide LED package manufacturers’ revenue reached 12.7 billion, and 57 percent YoY. After chip sales and other far-infrared product were deducted, the worldwide HB LED production value reached 8.6 billion, and 58 percent YoY.

In regional performance, Korean manufacturers’performance rose dramatically, in terms of worldwide package manufacturers’ revenue and high power LED production value, and outperformed that of Taiwanese enterprises. Korean LED enterprise accounted for 23-24 percent market share, and took the second place in the world. In terms of revenue ranking of individual LED package manufacturers, Nichia still took the first place, but Samsung LED rose to the second place.

Tn HB LED application segment, since LED backlight was introduced in the TV, monitor, and notebook, Chu estimated that HB LED application accounts for 33 percent of medium-large backlight application, and 21% of lighting application, but only 16 percent of mobile application, which had been the largest part of its application.

In terms of future outlook, Chu remarked that HB LED in medium- to large-size backlight application will continue to increase, but ASP and usage units will likely decrease, accounting for around 30% of the market. However, the HB LED market size has been expanding in lighting application, and therefore, Chu believes that it will increase to 43 percent by 2014. Moreover, CAGR of HB LED production value will reach 17 percent within five years.

In the last session, a panel was held and the discussed topic was “How to accelerate LED lighting popularization in the next five years?”

What global industries shall do to develop LED lighting and accelerate LED lighting popularization? Solutions included: Production scale expansion, R&D investment and CAPEX expansion,Patents sharing, cross-licensing, cooperation between up- and down stream, joint ventures market demand increase and cost reduction, government regulation stimulus, subsidy policy, example government purchases, Establishment of various LED standards.
