Seoul Semiconductor takes third place in market share of white LEDs

KOREA: Seoul Semiconductor, a leading global manufacturer of LEDs, rose to third place in market share of white LEDs last month, a report by The Nikkei Group in Japan revealed. According to the report, Seoul Semiconductor has risen to 5.7 percent of the world’s white LED market, which is led by Nichia of Japan (32 percent) and OSRAM Optodevice of Germany (7.9 percent).

Last year, Seoul Semiconductor’s market share in this fast-growing sector was 2.4 percent. Nichia’s market share fell 4.5 percent from last year, the report said, and OSRAM Optodevice dipped 1.1 percent from a year ago.

Seoul Semiconductor, which has operations in North America, took the 4th place in the total world LED market, according to the last year’s “LED Market Report” by IMS Research and a July report by Strategies Unlimited. The company is projected to overtake its nearest competitor for 3rd place sometime this year.

“The company’s LED sales have uniformly increased in all the areas including LED TV, cellular phones, and automobiles. Growth is especially significant in medium to large LED TV’s, which is powering the growth of the current LED market, said Lee Sang-min, VP of Worldwide Sales at Seoul Semiconductor.

“The company has also succeeded in diversification of customers and product groups creating structure and devices to support all major market segments so the increase of capturing market share will continue.”

The white LED is considered crucial in many market segments, especially Solid State Lighting where the energy savings and long life prove critical in reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Seoul Semiconductor is a vertically integrated company, capable of manufacturing EPI to chips, packages, and modules based on its 5,000 patents, creating cost competitiveness and the flexibility to meet any market situation.

Seoul Semiconductor plans to continue to make aggressive investments in facilities targeting a monthly production of 1.5B packaged units per month and is actively obtaining and cultivating individual talent to support and sustain this impressive growth.
