Active-Semi announces breakthrough LED technology

Lighting Japan LED/OLED Technology Expo 2012, SAN JOSE, USA: Active-Semi will unveil a breakthrough LED lighting solution at the 4th Lighting Japan LED/OLED Technology Expo in Tokyo on January 18-20.

The new ACT801/802 LED driver ICs are based on Active-Semi's patented Active Direct DriveTM and patent-pending Active Valley FillTM technologies. This solution dramatically reduces an LED bulb component count from over 50 devices down to 10 and eliminates the need for the electrolytic capacitor and magnetic components while eliminating conventional flicker and stroboscopic effects.

With superior efficiency and power factor correction, the ACT801/802 are ideal for advanced energy saving solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. The reduced component count and built-in over temperature/voltage/current regulation ensures high reliability and long life LED based luminaire designs.

“Our customers can significantly reduce the complexity of their designs by completely eliminating the standard power module and populating all components on one single-sided surface with the LEDs,” said Hiroshi Iwasaki, GM for Active-Semi PMU & New Technology business units. “We have also eliminated the need for EMI filtering components. Active-Semi's Active Valley Fill technology achieves brightness stability over AC line voltage variations. There are no visible flicker or strobe light motion effects. It provides a very crisp, clean and stable LED light source.”

The Active Direct Drive LED family of products will add 12W devices in the second quarter of this year.

* The ACT801 will support 5-8W applications operating at 100-120 VAC.
* The ACT802 will support 5-8W applications operating at 220-230 VAC.
* The ACT811 will support 12W applications operating at 100-120 VAC.
* The ACT812 will support 12W applications operating at 220-230 VAC.

All are available in the space saving, thermally enhanced SOP-16EP package and are pin-compatible. Pricing for the ACT801/802 is $1.50 in 10,000/month unit quantities. Pricing for the ACT811/812 is $1.80 in 10,000/month unit quantities. Samples and evaluation kits are available.
