Emerson Network Power extends range of ADN-C series slim three-phase DIN rail power supplies
HONG KONG: Emerson Network Power has extended its line of ultra compact ADN-C series three-phase DIN rail mounting power supplies with new 10 A and 5 A models.
The power supplies are ideal for a wide range of heavy duty industrial applications – especially those involving large inductive loads – such as machine control, semiconductor fabrication, conveyor and material handling systems, including Class 1, Division 2 hazardous locations. Designed for high reliability, these new models have a mean time between failure (MTBF) of more than 500,000 hours, and are backed by a comprehensive five year warranty.
Designed to operate direct from standard three-phase inputs, the new Emerson Network Power ADN-C series power supplies have a wide 320 to 540 Vac input range, capable of accommodating virtually all standard line voltages worldwide. They are also capable of operating from a dc input, in the range 450 to 760 Vdc. The power supplies are very high efficiency designs: typically 85 percent for the new 5 A model and 91 percent for the 10A model.
Both new ADN-C series power supply models produce a single 24 Vdc output, which is user adjustable up to 28 Vdc. The 5 A ADN5-24-3PM-C is rated at 120 W and the 10 A ADN10-24-3PM-C at 240 W. A PowerBoost facility overcomes the disadvantage of output fold-over under the high peak current demands of switching large inductive loads, such as heavy duty relays, solenoids or motors. This can result in the device failing to activate or start.
PowerBoost provides 1.5 times the supply’s nominal current for a minimum of 4 seconds, while maintaining a 20 V output to ensure successful operation.
The power supplies have a nominal full load operating temperature range of minus 25 to 60 degrees Celsius without derating, and are intended for fanless convection cooling. They are extensively protected against overvoltage, overload and continuous shortcircuit conditions. A ‘DC OK’ relay output is also provided, for remote diagnostics and condition monitoring.
Emerson Network Power ADN-C power supplies meet all applicable international EMC emission and immunity standards – including the Semi F47 sag immunity standard for semiconductor fabrication equipment. The designs also comply with the EN 60950 Low Voltage Directive and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). Comprehensive safety approvals include UL 508 and UL/IEC 60950-1.
The ADN-C series three-phase power supplies are available now.

Diodes Inc. packages MOSFETs for cooler operation
PLANO, USA: Diodes Inc. has introduced its first MOSFETs to be housed in the miniature DFN1212-3 package. With a junction to ambient thermal resistance (Rthj-a) of 130ºC/W, the package supports a power dissipation of up to 1W under continuous conditions, ensuring significantly cooler operation than that achievable with existing footprint-compatible SOT723 alternatives characterized by an Rthj-a performance of 280ºC/W.
Occupying the exact same 1.44mm2 printed circuit board area and with the same low profile 0.5mm off-board height as the less thermally efficient SOT723 packaged MOSFETs, these leadless DFN1212-3 packaged alternatives are drop-in replacements for high reliability signal and load-switching applications in a broad range of high portability consumer electronics products including digital cameras, tablet PCs and smartphones.
The MOSFET pair initially released by Diodes Incorporated are 20V rated and comprise the DMN2300UFD N-channel and the DMP21D0UFD P-channel parts. Helping to dramatically reduce conduction losses and power dissipation, the N-channel MOSFET presents a typical RDS(ON) of just 400mΩ at VGS of 1.8V, which is approximately 50% lower than the most popular SOT723 packaged alternatives.

IPC releases PCB industry results for Oct. 2011
BANNOCKBURN, USA: IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries, announced the October findings from its monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program.
PCB industry growth rates and book-to-bill ratios
Rigid PCB shipments were down 9.4 percent and bookings were up 1.0 percent in October 2011 from October 2010. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments decreased 1.3 percent and bookings declined 9.8 percent. Compared to the previous month, rigid PCB shipments decreased 10.3 percent and rigid bookings registered zero percent growth. The book-to-bill ratio for the North American rigid PCB industry in October 2011 remained just below parity at 0.99.
Flexible circuit shipments in October 2011 were down 11.3 percent and bookings declined 10.3 percent compared to October 2010. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments increased 0.3 percent and bookings increased 1.7 percent. Compared to the previous month, flexible circuit shipments decreased 25.8 percent and flex bookings were down 14.3 percent. The North American flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio in October 2011 declined to 0.95.
For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in October 2011 decreased 9.6 percent from October 2010, as orders booked decreased 0.1 percent from October 2010. Year to date, combined industry shipments were down 1.1 percent and bookings were down 8.8 percent. Compared to the previous month, combined industry shipments for October 2011 decreased 11.9 percent and bookings decreased 1.4 percent. The combined (rigid and flex) industry book-to-bill ratio in October 2011 remained at 0.99.
“North American PCB sales are down from the previous month, but this is a normal seasonal pattern,” said Sharon Starr, IPC market research director. “The good news is that rigid PCB orders are holding steady,” she added.
The book-to-bill ratios are calculated by dividing the value of orders booked over the past three months by the value of sales billed during the same period from companies in IPC’s survey sample. A ratio of more than 1.00 suggests that current demand is ahead of supply, which is a positive indicator for sales growth over the next two to three months.
Book-to-bill ratios and growth rates for rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined are heavily affected by the rigid PCB segment. Rigid PCBs represent an estimated 89 percent of the current PCB industry in North America, according to IPC’s World PCB Production Report.
Role of domestic production
IPC’s monthly survey of the North American PCB industry tracks bookings and shipments from US and Canadian facilities, which provide indicators of regional demand. These numbers do not measure US and Canadian PCB production. To track regional production trends, IPC asks survey participants for the percent of their reported shipments that were produced domestically (i.e., in the USA or Canada). In October 2011, 83 percent of total PCB shipments reported were domestically produced.
Domestic production accounted for 83 percent of rigid PCB and 79 percent of flexible circuit shipments in October by IPC’s survey participants. These numbers are significantly affected by the mix of companies in IPC’s survey sample, which change slightly in January, but are kept constant through the remainder of the year.
Bare circuits vs. assembly
Flexible circuit sales typically include value-added services such as assembly, in addition to the bare flexible circuits. In October, the flexible circuit manufacturers in IPC’s survey sample indicated that bare circuits accounted for about 60 percent of their shipment value reported for the month. Assembly and other services make up a large and growing segment of flexible circuit producers’ businesses.
This figure is also sensitive to changes in the survey sample, which may occur at the beginning of each calendar year.
